INTRODUCTIONINDOWSVista is Microsofts much anticipated newclient operating system. When released it is due toreplace Windows XP as Microsofts premier desktopoperating system. Windows Vista represents a significantdeparture from previous Windows systems both in terms ofits emphasis on security and its many new features. Assecurity has grown in importance Microsoft has paidincreasingly more attention to it evidenced by thesignificant resource investment that has been made.Windows Vista provides Microsoft with its first opportunityto introduce security into the design process of the coreoperating system itself. Microsoft has also chosen WindowsVista as the platform on which to introduce many newlydeveloped technologies.The Windows Vista network stack is particularly interestingbecause many of its components are new. The TCP/IPnetwork stack itself has been rewritten and is one of Vistaslargest departures from previous versions of Windows. Thenew stack was written to allow easier maintenanceimportant new performance enhancements and improvedstability 30]. It integrates support for IPv6 and IPv4 into asingle network stack and provides IPv6 support in thedefault configuration for the first time in the history ofWindows.
