Engines Involved: 4 cylinder 2.0L gasoline Total Number of US Vehicles: 324,000 (85,000 from State of California) Description of Problem: Vehicles may have a malfunctioning Heated Exhaust Gas Oxygen Sensor (O 2 sensor) which causes higher levels of hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide than Federal emission standards allow. EPA Test Results from a vehicle with the failed O 2 sensor EPA Testing Federal Standard Non-methane HC: 6.87 gpm 0.25 gpm Carbon Monoxide 4.85 gpm 3.4 gpm Description of Investigation: Routine EPA testing of 1999 model year vehicles at the National Vehicle and Fuel Emissions Laboratory (NVFEL) identified a tailpipe emissions problem and determined the cause to be a failed O 2 sensor. Volkswagen subsequently volunteered to recall these vehicles as well as similar 2000 and 2001 model year vehicles. Repair: The engine control module will be reprogrammed with updated O 2 sensor control software and the O 2 sensor will be inspected and replaced if necessary at no charge to the customer Owner Notification: Notification of involved vehicle owners by Volkswagen will begin December 21, 2001. Information for Owners: The recall repair will be performed free of charge. The repair takes approximately one hour. Upon receipt of a notification letter from Volkswagen, owners should schedule an appointment with a Volkswagen dealer.
