In my experience we really are seeing what is becoming aneducational crisis in that online student research seems to be predominantly conducted throughgeneric search engines like Google and AskJeeves putting little or no thought into the validity andreliability of the information found (which usually appears on of a 3000page result!). And tomake matters worse teachers oftentimes allow this practice not realizing the dangers thataccompany it. So in addition to the need to teach students about the concepts of validity and reliabilityin research it is also necessary to work these same lessons into staff development. Our students arenot properly prepared for postsecondary education if they leave us thinking that Google is anacademicallyacceptable resource for locating information.In Madelyn Hunter vernacular this lesson is the guided practice of an overall unit overNebraskAccess. A 50minute class period should be sufficient for students to complete the activitywhich should take place after a thorough lecture/demonstration of what NebraskAccess is and how itworks along with a convincing demonstration/discussion on why generic search engines are notappropriate in academia.In this type of unit handson guided practice is imperative. Its unreasonable to assume that studentswill go to NebraskAccess on their own instead of Google simply because you gave a demonstrationto the class.
