O ne of the Middle Easts largest drilling contractors,      National Drilling Company (NDC), has implemented SAP R/3 to reduce its integration costs and bring down operational expenses. Deployed in two phases over just 10 months, the solution covers 25 locations      and serves approximately 300 users. "The SAP implementation, code named Project Excellence, was commenced       on 5th November 2001 and went on live on 1st September 2002," says Jassim M. Saeed, IS&T division manager at National Drilling Compa- ny. "NDC decided to implement SAP R/3 in order to automate its operations      and provide better operational efficiency," he explains. R/3 replaced a host of legacy applications         at the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) subsidiary, including    its Dataflex database programme and a number of in-house developed programmes. The multiple legacy systems used to service the business requirements were old and expensive to maintain and that lack of integration resulted in the duplication of data and data redundancy. There was also a lack of integration     in the legacy systems, which meant high maintenance costs and poor reporting functionality. Before opting for R/3, NDC investigated      a number of enterprise resource planning (ERP) applications. NDC opted for SAP R/3 due to the total integration of its modules and the fact that it provides major companies     worldwide with a strong, up-to- date information systems and technology       backbo ne. The implementation was handled by a combination of in-house staff and SAP consultants.
