Introduction In recent years, computer hacking and spying has become a for-profit industry while at the same time cyber- crime continues to rise. Every computer is at risk. Even Mac OS X computers, are at risk if not properly configured and operated. Protect your machine! Follow the steps in this document to secure your Mac. Getting Help If you have problems following these guidelines, contact the Computing Services Help Center at or your departmental computing administrator. Basic Steps Step 1: Find Your Mac OS X Version The first step in securing your Mac is to know what OS version is installed. Although portions of this document are applicable for older Mac OS X versions, this was written with Mac OS X 10.3 and 10.4 in mind. Use the following steps to find your Mac OS X version. 1.  From the Apple menu, select About This Mac. 2.  The version number will appear in the window. 1 Note: You are ENCOURAGED to upgrade your computer to Mac OS X 10.4. For more information on upgrading visit Apples web site. You may also purchase an upgrade at the Carnegie Mellon Computer Store . Step 2: Secure your Account with a Strong Password To prevent someone from gaining access to your computer, physically or through the network, each user account MUST have a strong password.
