Linux on Toshiba Portege 3020CT 1. Partitioning 2. InstallationPage 1Linux on Toshiba Portege 3020CTI decided to install DSL (Damn Small Linux) on this machine after failing with Knoppix. I was not able to install directly from the cdrom neither the PCMCIA device whichcomes with the computer nor a USB cdrom. However one can do it by copying the operating system to the hard drive (if another OS is already installed) and using a bootdiskette which I will describe below. The system I was starting with had a semifunctional version of Ubuntu which a friendhad installed but it was slow to boot and X was not yet working so I wanted to try DSL orKnoppix. Unfortunately Knoppix does not provide boot floppies on its download mirrors:you have to get it running somewhere first to make boot floppies. I was not able to dothat. DSL on the other hand makes images of the boot floppies available along with theOS.1. PartitioningI used Partition Magic to create two new partitions; one of 300 MB for DSL and anotherlarger one for Knoppix which in the end turned out to be unnecessary but in retrospectnot a bad idea. DSL seems to prefer being installed on an ext2 file system but there isno harm in mounting other partitions as ext3. Making the ext2 partition small cuts downon the fscking time.2. InstallationI used the existing OS to copy DSL from the USB cdrom to the new DSL partition.Make a directory /KNOPPIX (since DSL is actually a small version of Knoppix) in theroot directory and place the big image KNOPPIX in that directory. Then boot usingthe boot floppy created from bootfloppy.img not bootfloppyusb.img. On booting typedsl fromhd=/dev/hda5 xsetup (assuming your DSL partition was hda5 of course). Itis necessary to go through xsetup manually in order to get X working properly. ChooseXfbdev instead of Xvesa. At this point you should have a decentlooking desktop although the screen size is not yet correctthe X server thinks the screen is deeper than itis. Dont worry this will get fixed.Onc ...
